Back in the day, a hundred million years ago, I was running LTSP, and I had my kids running crappy old junkers that connected to my desktop, back in the day when ethernet was a thing you had to get by installing a card. ![]() It just hit me that instead of buying a new Linux desktop, I should figure out a way to run Linux on that thing in a virtual machine, and connect to that virtual machine from this workstation, via a minimalist thin client. That box is insane, but apart from the rare occasions when I get inspired to create, it's just sitting there idling, running up my electric bill for little purpose. It's water cooled, and it doesn't like being turned off. I should just turn that power sucking monster off, but every time I do, it takes forever to get it running again. I don't actually do much in the studio, because I have been horribly depressed ever since my divorce. I have a lot of stuff on that box I just can't do on Linux. I was a Linux audio developer for about 20 years, but I got sick of waiting for the Year of the Linux Desktop. In the other room, I have a ridiculous $3,500 Windows 11 PC (12th gen Core i9 12-900KF) that I bought to run my home studio. ![]() I just had an experience where I was annoyed by its crappy performance, and started to think about replacing it. I spend most of my keyboard time sitting in front of an aging Linux desktop. ![]()
